Evaluation of turbulent models in sudden expansion analysis at High Reynolds numbers

چکیده
Using abrupt expansion as an energy dissipater in bottom outlet of dams may have unfavorable effects on dam safety due to cavitation. Domain and intensity of cavitation, depends on magnitude and location of negative pressure. Therefore predicting the extent and intensity of negative pressure plays an important role in detection of cavitation. On the other hand, there is no globally accepted turbulence model to predict negative pressure. In this paper an experimental investigation has been performed to determine the variation of pressure. Different turbulent models were ranked through the comparison of analytical and experimental results. It was found that the Realizable ε − k model has better prediction with respect to the others. Key-Words: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Turbulent models, sudden expansion, wall-pressure, energy dissipation, cavitation.

A New Model for Prediction of Heat Eddy Diffusivity in Pipe Expansion Turbulent Flows
A new model to calculate heat eddy diffusivity in separating and reattaching flows based on modification of constant Prt is proposed. This modification is made using an empirical correlation between maximum Nusselt number and entrance Reynolds number. The model includes both the simplicity of Prt=0.9 assumption and the accuracy of two-equation heat-transfer models. Furthermore, an appropriate l...

One of the newest of viscoelastic RANS turbulence models for drag reducing channel flow with polymer additives is studied in different flow and rheological properties. In this model, finitely extensible nonlinear elastic-Peterlin (FENE-P) constitutive model is used to describe the viscoelastic effect of polymer solution and turbulence model is developed in the k-ϵ-(ν^2 ) ̅-f framework. The geome...
متن کاملPhysical Modelling of Self-Aeration in a Cavitating Sudden PIPE Expansion Flow
Sudden pipe expansions have been known as efficient hydraulic energy dissipaters for a long time. The complex phenomenon of flow separation and velocity discontinuity at the interface of incoming jet and the recirculation flow, results in intensive shear and tensile rupture of the fluid and the associated destructive phenomenon of cavitation. This paper focuses on aeration in sudden pipe expans...

The thermo-hydraulic behavior of the air flow over a two dimensional ribbed channel wasnumerically investigated in various rib-width ratio configurations (B/H=0.5-1.75) atdifferent Reynolds numbers, ranging from 6000 to 18000. The capability of differentturbulence models, including standard k-ε, RNG k-ε, standard k-ω, and SST k-ω, inpredicting the heat transfer rate was compared with the experi...

Direct numerical simulation of turbulent flow behind a cylinder, wake flow, using the random vortex method for an incompressible fluid in two dimensions is presented. In the random vortex method, the primary variable is vorticity of the flow field. After generation on the cylinder wall, it is followed in two fractional time step in a Lagrangian system of coordinates, namely convection and diffu...
